Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Kannapolis, NC - The Kannapolis Intimidators and West Virginia Power experienced a roller coaster ride in Saturday night's double header at FieldCrest Cannon Stadium, as the Power came from behind to defeat the Intimidators 4-3 in game one, and the Intimidators used a 12-run sixth inning and erased a four run deficit to take the second game 14-5.
Kannapolis used a pair of homeruns to build a 3-0 lead in game one. Jose Vargas belted a two-run homer in the second inning and Seth Loman hit a solo homer in the sixth. Down to their final set of outs in the seventh, West Virginia used a four hit attack to plate three runs and tie the game. Chase D'Arnaud's double started the inning and he scored the first run when Jeremy Farrell reached on a fielder's choice. Bobby Spain's groundout scored Farrell and Marcus Davis ripped a two-out single to plate Quincy Latimore. In the eighth inning, Farrell stepped in with runners at the corners and two out. He hit a ground ball to second, and Drew Garcia booted it, allowing Robbie Grossman to score the eventual game winning run.
West Virginia built a four run lead in game two. Grossman belted a solo homer in the first inning, his second of the year. Greg Picart drove in the second run on a two-out single in the second and Marcus Davis doubled in a pair of runs in the third. Kannapolis cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs in the third. Sergio Morales brought in the first run on a sacrifice fly and Loman doubled in the second run. The Power scored their final run in the fourth. Grossman stole third base, and John Curtis's throw to third in an attempt to catch Grossman sailed into left field, allowing him to score.
The Intimidators put together an incredible sixth inning to pull away. They sent 18 batters to the plate, and scored 12 runs on eight hits. Four players scored twice in the inning, everyone reached at least once, while six batters reached twice. Eight players scored at least one time during the inning as well. Two batters were hit by a pitch, there were three walks, including two with the bases loaded.
In game one Yoffri Martinez (4-3) allowed a hit over an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief to get the victory. Dan Remenowsky (3-3) allowed a pair of runs on three hits over an inning and a third and was tagged with the loss. Charlis Burdie (3-4) tossed a pair of scoreless innings in game two to earn the victory while Ryan Kelly (1-2) allowed eight runs on five hits over an inning of work and was tagged with the loss.
West Virginia is 21-34 after the split, and the Intimidators are 28-27 with the split. Greg Picart and Quincy Latimore both hit safely twice in both games. Erik Huber turned in a three hit performance in game two, and he's 13-for-24 over his last six games. 13 out of their last 15 games have been decided by two runs or less. They are 7-8 during that stretch.
West Virginia will finish the five game series against the Kannapolis Intimidators with a double header at FieldCrest Cannon Stadium on Sunday afternoon. In game one, right hander Kyle McPherson (4-1, 5.82) will start for the Power and the Intimidators will counter with right Dexter Carter (2-2, 3.86).
