CHARLESTON, SC - Lorenzo Cain and Mat Gamel each had three hits while Darren Ford homered and drove home three as the West Virginia Power defeated the Charleston RiverDogs, 8-1, in South Atlantic League action Thursday night in front of 4,315 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
With the victory, the Power salvage a split in the four-game series and improve to 54-48 overall and 15-18 in the second half. Charleston, which won the second and third games of the series, falls to 53-51 overall and 15-19 in the second half.
Power starter Will Inman was solid for five shutout innings to improve his record to 7-1, as he scattered two hits, struck out five and pitched out of several jams to strand six runners.
On the night, West Virginia accounted for 12 hits to six for Charleston, with Tim Battle securing two of them for the hosts.
West Virginia exploded for five unearned runs in the second inning and, collectively, hit for the cycle. Michael Bell led off with a triple to left, and Kenny Holmberg followed with a ground ball to the pitcher Zach Kroenke (5-6), whose throw was missed by first baseman Ben Jones for an error, allowing Bell to score.
After the next two batters recorded outs, Hector Bernal singled home Holmberg. Leadoff batter Darren Ford then blasted an 0-1 pitch over the left center field wall, his fourth long ball of the season, and increased the Power's lead to 4-0. Cain followed with a double and scored on Gamel's RBI single.
The Power added their sixth run in the fourth inning on Gamel's RBI single to left center.
The RiverDogs' lone run plated in the sixth when Jones connected on the first pitch he saw from reliever Wilfrido Laureano for his 15th home run of the season, a line drive that sailed just inside the left field foul pole.
West Virginia added two insurance runs in the eighth inning when Ford singled home his third run of the game and Cain added another RBI single against Eric Wordekemper.
Kroenke suffered the loss as he worked four innings and surrendered six runs on nine hits. Wordekemper threw four innings and allowed two runs on four hits and Abel Gomez closed out the ninth without incident.
The game was delayed for 22 minutes in the top of the fifth inning when Battle, attempting to break up a double play, ran into Bernal, the shortstop. In the collision at second base, Bernal suffered a lower left leg injury that appeared serious, delaying the game for 22 minutes before he was taken off the field in an ambulance. Bernal was taken to Roeper Hospital for x-rays.
The RiverDogs continue this eight-game home stand by hosting the Lexington Legends, the first-half Northern Division champions, beginning Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Charleston is scheduled to start righty Bryan Villalona (7-7, 4.13 ERA) on the mound while Lexington counters with righty Brad James (3-2, 1.39 ERA).
