Rome, GA - The Greensboro Grasshoppers defeated the Rome Braves 3-2 in a pitcher's duel Thursday night in front of 3,069 fans at State Mutual Stadium.
The game was locked in a scoreless tie through the first five innings as both starting pitchers shut down any offensive attempt. Rome's Adam Stanley threw six scoreless innings and only allowed three hits while Greensboro's starter Brett Sinkbeil threw five scoreless innings. The Braves finally got to Sinkbeil in the bottom of the sixth as Jamie Romak delivered a two-out single and was followed by Jordan Schafer who ripped an RBI triple into the right-center field gap giving the Braves the lead 1-0.
Stanley was replaced by Rome pitcher Asher Demme in the top of the seventh and the Grasshoppers immediately capitalized as Kris Harvey drew a two out walk and third baseman Jonathan Fulton crushed a home run over the scoreboard in left center field giving Greensboro a 2-1 lead.
The Grasshoppers would add an insurance run the top of the eighth on an Andrew Jenkins sacrifice fly that plated Paul Witt who had reach on a double extending Greensboro's lead 3-1. Rome would make a rally attempt in the bottom of the ninth with a single run, but the attempt would fall short as Grasshopper's reliever Blake Jones shut the door to earn the victory for Greensboro 3-2.
Demme (3-6) picked up the loss for the Braves going three innings and allowing three earned runs.
