Power Play Lifts Thunder to 7-1 Victory Over Denver

Wichita, KS (January 27th) - Call it smothering defense or an offensive display. Either way, Wichita (25-14-3) out-dueled Denver (21-17-4) for the second-straight night in impressive fashion with a 7-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at INTRUST Bank Arena in front of 8,031 fans. Wichita out-scored Denver in two games this weekend 14-1 and limited the Cutthroats to 25 shots in two games. Matt Robinson led the way with five points, including his second hat trick in a Thunder uniform. The Thunder win-streak moves to four games and leads the season-series 3-1-0.
Wichita jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the back of three power play goals. At 6:07, Robinson fired a shot towards the Denver net that appeared to hit Lowe and he was able to tip a loose puck through the legs of Millan to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Lowe and Robinson connected again with a beautiful feed across the slot from Lowe to Robinson and he buried it making it 2-0.
Over the last two nights, Wichita tallied seven goals in the second period and scored three tonight. Andrew Martens and Greger Hanson went back-to-back in 26 seconds to extend the Thunder lead to 4-0 early in the second. Martens' goal was the third-straight on the man advantage to open up the game. Robinson scored his second of the season at 12:38 and the rout was on, making it 5-0.
Wichita added two more in the third with Jarred Mohr scoring at 6:29, making it 6-0. Robinson scored his hat trick goal at 8:17 of the third period and his fifth of the season. AJ Gale finally got the Cutthroats on the board at 11:27, snapping the scoreless streak for Denver and making it 7-1.
Robinson recorded his third hat trick of his career and had five points on the night. Flath and Hanson extended their scoring streaks to four games as each had a point in the contest. Trimm and Summers both had three assists. Torrie Jung won for the 12th time this season, stopping 10 of 11 shots he faced and had his streak of scoreless hockey stopped at 111:27.
Wichita set a new franchise record for fewest shots against in a game, allowing just 11 shots on net. The previous low was 14, which the Thunder tied last night against Denver and last happened on March 14th at Fort Worth.
Wichita went 3-for-5 on the power play and Denver was 0-for-1. In four games against Denver, Wichita is 6-for-16 on the power play and good for 37.5%.
