WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita Thunder scored on each of their first three power play chances to take control in a 7-1 final over the Denver Cutthroats on Sunday night in front of 8,031 at Intrust Bank Arena.
Matt Robinson scored the second of those power play goals as part of a hat-trick night. AJ Gale scored Denver's lone goal in the contest to tie Arizona's Chad Nehring for the Central Hockey League lead with 25.
Robinson's man-advantage goal came at 9:04 of the first period, almost three minutes after Ian Lowe opened up the scoring for the Thunder (25-14-3) with a power play goal of his own. Andrew Martens added the third power play goal of the run for Wichita, just 2:41 into the second period.
Gale's goal for the Cutthroats (21-17-4) was fed by Brad Smyth from behind the net as the forward snapped a wrist shot from the right circle with 8:33 to go in period three. The goal ended a shutout span of 111:27 held against the Fish by Wichita's Torrie Jung over the past two games. Jung finished with 10 saves on the night.
Kieran Millan started the game for the Cutthroats but was pulled midway through the second period after stopping 16 of 21 shots. Kent Patterson turned away five of seven shots in relief.
Wichita also picked up second period goals by Greger Hanson at 3:07 and Robinson at 12:38. Jarred Mohr scored for Wichita at 6:29 of the third and Robinson added his hat-trick goal at 8:17.
