Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs took advantage of a long second-period power play on the way to a 4-1 win over the Lewiston Maineiacs in Game 2 of their President's Cup semifinal.

The game's turning point came when Olivier Dame-Malka drilled Jonathan Huberdeau from behind into the boards at 7:57 of the second period, earning a five-minute major and game misconduct. Stanislav Galiev, Kevin Gagne and Huberdeau all capitalized on the man advantage to turn a 1-0 nailbiter into a 4-0 game. Michael Kirkpatrick had the other Saint John goal as the Dogs seized a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series before 5,135 fans at Harbour Station.

Mathieu Corbeil made 24 saves for the win and established a new team record by running his shutout streak to 121:43 before allowing a third-period goal to Kirill Kabanov.

Nicholas Champion stopped 28 of 32 shots for the Maineiacs and Andrey Makarov stopped all 14 he faced in nearly 28 minutes of relief.

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoff series continues with Game 3 Tuesday in Lewiston, an 8 p.m. Atlantic Time start.

Lewiston's Etienne Brodeur and Kirill Kabanov had a great chance on a 2-on-1 in the early going, but Corbeil waited them out and slammed the door shut. Kirkpatrick then opened the scoring at 2:16. Anthony kept a broken play alive by keeping the puck in just inside the right point and getting it down low to Kirkpatrick. The 20-year-old veteran spun around, looked for a pass, then fired a high shot across the goaltender's body from low in the left-wing circle. Simon Despres picked up the other assist on the goal, the third of the post-season for the active QMJHL playoff career scoring leader. Champion made an incredible save to keep the score 1-0 heading into the intermission. Zack Phillips picked a defenseman's pocket and fed the puck to Huberdeau, who found Galiev alone in front of the net. But Champion stayed with the Russian's spin move and made a left pad stop.

Huberdeau was corralling a puck in the right-wing corner of the offensive zone when Malka came in from behind and crunched the star forward, who lay on the ice as the Lewiston defenseman was escorted off the ice. Galiev was the first to capitalize on the long power play, taking a feed from Kirkpatrick at Champion's right and squeezing the puck through the goalie at 9:50 for his eighth. Gagne assisted on that goal and then scored one of his own 18 seconds later on a rush down the left wing, his second of the playoffs, with assists from Eric Gelinas and Corbeil. Lewiston's Dillon Fournier then took a delay of game penalty to set up a 5-on-3, and Huberdeau finished Nathan Beaulieu's rebound at 12:20 for his league-best 11th goal.

Kabanov notched Lewiston's lone tally with an extra attacker on for a delayed penalty at 9:54 of the third, bringing Corbeil's shutout streak to an end.

The series continues with Games 3 and 4 in Lewiston on Tuesday and Wednesday, both 8 p.m. Atlantic Time starts.
