Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - The Saint John Sea Dogs defended their home ice well this weekend. After taking a 5-4 overtime decision in game one, the Sea Dogs followed that up with a 4-1 victory in game two, taking a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven series against the Lewiston MAINEiacs.
The Sea Dogs started the scoring early in the first period. Simon Despres kept the puck in the offensive zone, before finding Michael Kirkpatrick open in the left circle. Kirkpatrick gathered in the pass, spun, and fired a shot in off of the post, giving the home team the lead.
In the second period, Saint John added to the lead, lighting the lamp three times on the man advantage. Olivier Dame-Malka was given a major penalty for checking from behind, as well as a game misconduct, giving the home team five consecutive minutes on the power play. Stanislav Galiev scored the first goal of the period, slipping a shot through Nicholas Champion's pads from the bottom of the left circle. 18 seconds later, Kevin Gagne found the twine, rushing into the offensive zone, and scoring from the left circle. A few minutes later, Jonathan Huberdeau joined the scoresheet, knocking in a rebound from the top of the crease. Huberdeau's tally ended the night for Champion, who was forced to make 28 saves on 32 shots in 32:20 of action.
The MAINEiacs broke Mathieu Corbeil-Theriault's shutout bid in the third period, as Kirill Kabanov extended his point streak to ten games, batting in a backhander from the left circle. Stefan Fournier and Sam Carrier assisted on Kabanov's seventh goal of the playoffs.
Mathieu Corbeil-Theriault ended up making 24 saves on 25 shots for Saint John, earning his third win in as many appearances during the 2011 postseason. Nicholas Champion took the loss for Lewiston, allowing four goals on 32 shots, before being replaced by Andrey Makarov, who was perfect on 14 shots.
The MAINEiacs and Sea Dogs will now head to Lewiston for games three and four of the series on Tuesday and Wednesday. Face-off for both games will be at 7:00.
