Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Bowling Green, KY - The West Virginia Power scored four runs on seven hits through the first two and a half innings of Wednesday night's game at Bowling Green Ballpark, but the Hot Rods held the Power hitless over the final six innings of the contest and scored 11 unanswered runs to take the second game of the series 11-4.
Bobby Spain smashed his first homer of the season, a two-run shot in the top of the first to put the Power on the board. Spain struck again in the third inning with an RBI double and scored later in the inning on Erik Huber's single. Huber's base hit was the last of the contest for the Power, as the Hot Rods pitching staff did not allow another man to reach, retiring 20 batters in a row.
The Hot Rods began their comeback in the bottom of the third on a two-out RBI single from Jake Jeffries. Henry Wrigley began the fourth inning with a solo homerun and Justin Reynolds made it a one-run game after an RBI double. Anthony Scelfo began the fifth inning with a double and scored the tying run on Jeffries's groundout. Bowling Green took the lead with a three-run sixth inning. Robi Estrada drove in the first two runs on a single and he scored on Scelfo's two-bagger. Wrigley started the seventh inning with a double and scored on Calvin Anderson's error. Scelfo knocked in the final two runs of the game with a triple.
Tyree Hayes (1-2) retired all six batters he faced and struck out the side in the seventh inning to get the victory. Owen Brolsma (0-2) allowed six runs, four earned on four hits over an inning and a third and was tagged with the loss.
West Virginia fell to 4-10 with the loss and the Hot Rods improved to 6-8 after the win. Bobby Spain was the only Power player to turn in a multi-hit game. He went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and three RBI. Spain is hitting .353 on the road trip with three runs and four RBI. Robbie Grossman doubled in the third inning, and has reached base in each of his last five games.
The Power will continue the four game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Bowling Green Ballpark on Thursday night. Right hander Frank De Los Santos (0-0, 3.60) will start for Bowling Green and the Power will counter with right hander Maurice Bankston (0-1, 4.66). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:35 PM.
