Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Jeurys Familia (2-0) worked six innings while Savannah collected 11 hits en route to a, 4-2, win over the visiting Rome Braves at Historic Grayson Stadium Wednesday night. Familia worked six innings and allowed just one run on two hits.
The Sand Gnats were able to hang a three spot on the Rome Braves in the third when singles from Jordany Valdespin, Rafael Fernandez and Wilmer Flores plated the first run. Groundouts by Sean Ratliff and Eric Campbell drove in two more and Savannah never looked back.
Savannah (9-4) would add on a run in the fourth when Juan Lagares came around to score on a multi-error play by the right fielder Luis Sumoza. He misplayed the ball in the field and then threw it off line, allowing Lagares to score on a single by Valdespin.
Familia becomes is the fourth Gnat to throw six innings this season. Elvin Ramirez has gone six innings twice while Chris Schwinden has done it once. Jimmy Johnson chipped in two scoreless frames while Erik Turgeon pitched the ninth for his second save of the homestand.
Valdespin, Campbell, Wilmer Flores and Josh Satin all had two hits apiece while Fernandez extended his hitting streak to eight games by going 1-for-4.
Paul Clemens (0-2) gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits in four innings to suffer the loss for Rome.
The series continues tomorrow with a Thirsty Thursday contest presented by Rock 106.1, Connect Savannah and Budweiser. LHP Robert Carson (1-1, 3.12) will oppose Rome's Randall Delgado (0-1, 2.45) in the 7 p.m. contest. For tickets and a complete schedule, visit www.sandgnats.com or call 912.351.9150.
