Power, Controversy Propel Barnstormers Comeback

May 3, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

Two three-run homers and a controversial overturned call brought the Lancaster Barnstormers back from a 6-0 deficit on Thursday evening as the visitors completed a sweep with a 10-8 victory over Southern Maryland at Regency Furniture Stadium.

Southern Maryland appeared to increase its lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the sixth when Cory Vaughn's line drive toward right center field was initially ruled to have been trapped by a diving Darian Sandford. Manager Ross Peeples came out to argue and got the umpiring crew to confer. The call was overturned, leading to an eruption from Blue Crabs manager James Frisbie, who was promptly ejected from the game.

Lancaster picked up on the momentum and broke out the heavy lumber in the top of the next inning. Vladimir Frias singled to left, took second on a passed ball and raced to third on a "Baltimore Chop" single by Rico Noel. Sandford singled to left to cut the deficit to 6-2. Tyler Bortnick followed with a booming homer to left as the Barnstormers climbed within one. After a walk to Blake Gailen, Shane Watson was replaced by Joey Wagman (0-1). One out later, Trayvon Robinson picked up a walk, adding a second runner. Kyle Waldrop then went to the opposite field against Wagman for a go-ahead, three-run shot.

The Blue Crabs chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases on two singles and a walk off Garrett Granitz. Joey Wong made it 8-7 with a sac fly against Johnny Anderson, but Devon Rodriguez hit Johnny Bladel in the foot with a ground ball to end the inning.

Lancaster would add two in the ninth on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Joey Terdoslavich.

Again, Southern Maryland charged back, picking up three straight singles by Andrew Daniel, Bladel and Wong with two outs. Matt Reynolds settled down to retire Rodriguez on a pop out to second base to end the game for his first save.

Jesus Sanchez (1-0) threw the sixth to pick up the win for the Barnstormers.

Lancaster opens its home schedule on Friday evening at 7:00 against the York Revolution. Jonathan Albaladejo (0-1) will make the start for the 'Stormers while Mitch Atkins (0-0) goes for York. It is Star Wars Night at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Fans may tune into the broadcast at 6:45.

NOTES: All 16 hits for Southern Maryland were singles...Lancaster had six extra base hits, including two each by Bortnick, who also doubled, and Robinson, who had a double and triple...Gailen lost a six-game hitting streak, going 0-for-1 with four walks...Lancaster's only steal of the night was picked up by pinch runner Keenyn Walker in the ninth...Sandford has hit safely in all six games he has played...Lancaster scored 45 runs on 65 hits on the road trip.
