Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
CHARLESTON, WV - Onil Pena had two hits and two RBIs, capping a seven-RBI series, as West Virgina bested the BlueClaws 7-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park, completing a three-game sweep.
The BlueClaws (3-11) have dropped eight straight games, their longest losing streak since 2012 and just one off the franchise record of nine set in the first nine games of the 2006 season. West Virginia (8-5) swept the three-game series and is now three-games over .500 after a 5-5 start to the season.
Pena opened the scoring in the first inning with a solo home run to right field, his first home run of the season.
Lakewood tied the game in the second on an RBI single by Jimmy Smith.
The Power, however, would begen to open up their lead in the third. Pena and Ryan Ramiz, a CBA product, had RBI singles. Then in the fourth, after Francisco Morales put two on base, Robinson Martinez allowed a two-run double to Charlie McConnell to give the Power a 5-1 lead.
Bobby Honeyman hit a two-run home run, his first of the season, off Victor Santos in the fifth to put the Power up 7-1.
Morales (0-1) was charged with five runs in 3.1 innings with six strikeouts and three walks.
Power starter Ryne Inman (2-0) earned the win, allowing one run over five innings of work.
Abrahan Gutierrez had two hits for the BlueClaws and has hit safely in all six games in which he has played.
The BlueClaws return home on Thursday and open a three-game series with Lexington at FirstEnergy Park. RHP Kevin Gowdy will be on the mound for Lakewood.
