Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
CHARLESTON, WV (April 5, 2010) - The West Virginia Power, a Class-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, are pleased to announce their initial roster for the 2010 campaign. Gary Green, back for his second season at the helm of the Power, leads a talented group highlighted by four of the Pirates top prospects and 10 players with South Atlantic League experience.
Quinton Miller and Hunter Strickland return to West Virginia and to pace the Power pitching staff. Miller, the number 14 overall prospect according to Baseball America, went 2-3 in 2009 and struck out 40 over 56.1 innings.
Strickland, number 19 according to Baseball America, went 4-2 for the Power after coming over from the Boston Red Sox organization in a mid-season trade. Strickland co-authored one of the key highlights during the 2009 season when he and Diego Moreno combined to no-hit the Charleston RiverDogs on July 27 at Appalachian Power Park.
Several top draft picks from the 2009 class will also begin the season with the Power, including Evan Chambers. Chambers, a third-round selection from Hillsborough Community College, hit four home runs for State College last year and walked 50 times in 58 games.
Kyle Morgan returns after playing 43 games for West Virginia in 2009 and hit nine home runs, third most on the team. Morgan will be joined on the infield by Jarek Cunningham, who Baseball America rated as the number 20 prospect within the organization despite having missed the entire 2009 season due to injury, and Jesus Brito, who was acquired during the off-season from Cleveland.
The 2010 regular season begins on Thursday, April 8 in Savannah, while Opening Night at Appalachian Park is slated for Friday, April 16, when the Power host the Asheville Tourists at 7:05 pm.
