Crawdads Announce 2010 Opening Day Roster

HICKORY, N.C. -The Hickory Crawdads, South Atlantic League affiliate of the Texas Rangers, have announced their Opening Day roster for the 2010 season. The Crawdads will start the season this Thursday in Hagerstown with the maximum 25 active players and one on the disabled list. Thirteen of the twenty-six players on the Crawdads roster spent at least part of the 2009 season in a 'Dads uniform, including Opening Day starter RHP Joe Wieland (right), C Leonel De Los Santos, C Vinny DiFazio, RHP Andrew Doyle, SS Leury Garcia, 1B Ed Koncel, RHP Wilmer Font, RHP Trevor Hurley, CF Cody Podraza, RHP Neil Ramirez, OF Cristian Santana, 3B Matt West and C Zach Zaneski.
Eight players overall are former top-10 round draft picks, while seven on the roster were selected in the 2009 draft, including three of the Rangers first 10 picks last year -- 3rd-rounder LHP Robbie Erlin out of Scotts Valley High School in California, 4th-round pick RHP Andrew Doyle from the University of Oklahoma, and 8th-rounder RHP Braden Tullis out of Skagit Valley College in Washington state.
Former 2nd-round selection LHP Robbie Ross (7th) and Font (10th) are both ranked by Baseball America as two of the top 10 prospects in the Rangers system, and the publication also hails Ross's slider as being the best among all Rangers minor leaguers. The Crawdads pitching staff also features five 2009 draft picks, including LHP Chad Bell, who will be making his professional debut with Hickory.
The Crawdads kick off the 2010 regular season against the Hagerstown Suns this Thursday at Municipal Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., and all the action will be broadcast live on The Big Dawg 92.1FM and Hickorycrawdads.com. The 'Dads start the home schedule off with a bang with the Opening Day Fireworks Extravaganza on Friday, April 16 against the Kannapolis Intimidators. Gates open at 6 p.m., first pitch is at 7 p.m. and tickets are available right now on Hickorycrawdads.com or at the 'Dads Ticket Office at L.P. Frans Stadium.
