Potomac Nationals News Release
(WOODBRIDGE, VA) The Potomac Nationals and Frederick Keys split a doubleheader Friday night at Pfitzner Stadium. The Keys won game one 8-7 while the P-Nats took game two 8-2. Even though neither game went to extra innings, each was extremely long for a seven-inning game. The two games combined were five hours and fifteen minutes.
Frederick hit Potomac starter Marcos Frias early and often in Game One. They opened the days scored on a Ronnie Welty RBI double in the first to take a 1-0 lead. After Potomac tied it up 1-1 in their half of the first on a Derek Norris double, Frederick scored again in the second putting the Keys ahead for good 2-1.
The fourth was a disaster for Frias. After retiring the first two batters, he walked two, gave up a pair of hits then gave up a monster two-run homer to Welty which gave the Keys a 7-1 lead.
The P-Nats chipped away at the Key's lead with four in the bottom half of the fourth including a Derek Norris homer and one in the sixth. Potomac trailed 8-6 going into their final at-bats in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Tyler Moore singled and scored on a Bill Rhinehart single to cut the deficit to 8-7. Robby Jacobsen walked to send pinch-runner Dan Lyons to second. Jose Lozada hit a slicing line drive to left that Kyle Hudson robbed with a spectacular diving catch. Nick Moresi struck out looking on a 3-2 pitch that ended the game.
Game two started out with the Keys on top 1-0 after the road half of the second. But, Potomac started the assault on Frederick starter Luis Noel in the home half. With two outs and no one on, Lozada and Moressi hit back-to-back singles and Steve Lombardozzi drove them both in on his 26th double of the season.
The Potomac attached continued in the third. Bill Rhinehart hit a massive two-run homer, his ninth of the year, to deep right field to extend the the Nationals lead to 4-1.
Frederick scored an unearned run off P-Nat starter Adrian Alaniz in the fourth to pull within 4-2, but that was as close as they would get. Dan Lyons scored on a wild pitch in the fourth putting Potomac up 5-2. Sean Rooney led off the fifth with a double and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth giving the Nationals a 6-2 lead.
The final blow of the game came off the bat of Rhinehart again. He hit a laser over the right-center field wall off Frederick reliever Nate Nery which put the Nats up 8-2 in the sixth.
Pat McCoy came on and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh and final inning. Between the two games, only three of the 27 half-innings were 1-2-3 innings.
Jimmy Barthmaier got his second decision in as many outings for Potomac -- his first win as a member of the Washington Organization.
Potomac got big days from a few players. Steve Lombardozzi went a combined 5-8 in the two games with three RBI. Jose Lozada was 5-8 himself with three runs scored. Derek Norris was 3-6 with two walks and Bill Rhinehart
