TONIGHT: The Potomac Nationals and Myrtle Beach Pelicans meet in the finale of a three-game series...The P-Nats fell behind early, 4-0, and gave up four runs late in a 8-3 loss last night to the Birds....Potomacâs lead over second-place Lynchburg in the Carolina League Northern Division is 1.0 game.
TONIGHT: The Potomac Nationals send right-hander Jeff Mandel to the mound looking to bounce back from his only loss since joining the P-Nats on June 2...Last time out at Kinston he gave up five runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings, the most he has allowed since his promotion from Hagerstown...Over eight outings from May 14 to June 22, the 19th-round pick in last June's draft has held opponents to two runs or fewer posting a 2.45 ERA over that span...The former Baylor Bear has made just two starts at Pfitzner Stadium this season and both have been cut short because of the weather...In his first stint on June 10 against Winston-Salem, Mandel went three scoreless innings in a game that was suspended in the top of the fourth inning due rain...His last appearance at the Pfitz lasted five innings and he gave up just one unearned run on two hits against Frederick in a contest that lasted just 4 1/2 innings due to hail and heavy rain...The game was called in the bottom of the fifth with the P-Nats up 2-1 giving Mandel the only complete game on the pitching staff.
VIEW FROM THE TOP: Today marks the 86th consecutive day the P-Nats have been in or had a share of the division lead since moving to the top spot on April 10...Last season the Nationals spent 31 consecutive days in first from April 5 through May 5...The P-Nats ended the first half in last place, 10 games under .500 and only saw first place for one day, June 21, after May 5.
LYONS DEN: Recently promoted infielder Dan Lyons continues his hot play with the Potomac Nationals...Last night the 23-year-old went 2-for-5 with a RBI, run scored and a stolen base...He had reached base safely in seven straight plate appearances before the string was snapped in the bottom of the sixth when he grounded out to short...Lyons had a career-night Tuesday night going 4-for-4 and reaching base all five times he came to the plate including a double, RBI, and a walk...The 23-year-old previously had two three-hit performances in Low-A Hagerstown...Lyons was a 14th-round selection in the 2007 draft out of the University of Minnesota.
SERIES SLUMP: With last night's 8-3 loss to Myrtle Beach, Potomac dropped its first series of the second half...The P-Nats took two of three games on the road at Winston-Salem, Myrtle Beach, and Kinston, and swept Frederick at Pfitzner Stadium...The Pelicans have now won three straight from the Nationals coming into play tonight.
