Salem RidgeYaks News Release
LYNCHBURG, VA - The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced Affiliate of the Houston Astros, entered into a pitcher's dual Friday night. Starters Casey Hudspeth (SAL) and Tony Watson (LYN) went a combined 13 innings while allowing just one run on nine hits with 13 strikeouts. But neither man got the decision. It was when the starters left that the game was decided.
Down 1-0 in the 7th against Hillcats reliever Eric Krebs, Salem's Jhon Florentino led off with a double. The third baseman was bunted over by Nick Moresi and then scored on a sac-fly by Kevin Carkeek. That tied the game at one.
Salem then loaded the bases in the 8th but couldn't plate a run. Lynchburg responded by scoring in the bottom of the frame off Avalanche reliever Raymar Diaz. Jim Negrych led off with a double followed by a Jamie Romak walk. With two on and nobody out first baseman Kent Sakamoto laid down a bunt that Diaz fielded and played to third. The throw beat the speedy Negrych for the inning's first out. But with two runners still aboard, Miles Durham delivered an RBI single to take a 2-1 Lynchburg lead.
The Avs started a rally in the ninth with a lead-off double from Moresi, but the centerfielder was caught in a rundown on a Carkeek fielder's choice for the first out. Nobody else reached base in the inning.
The game marks the second sweep of Salem in 2008.
The Avalanche travels north to Woodbridge tomorrow. Salem faces Potomac for a three game set with LHP Sergio Severino against RHP Ryan Wagner on a rehab start from parent club Washington.
