TONIGHT: The Potomac Nationals and Kinston Indians meet for the second of three games...Last night the P-Nats exploded for 12 runs on 12 hits in a 12-5 victory...It was the fifth straight victory for Potomac after dropping the first two games of the year...The Nationals have outscored Salem, Myrtle Beach, and now Kinston 27-11 over the streak...The pitching staff's ERA during the streak is 1.37...After dropping the opener last year, the P-Nats won the final four games of an abbreviated seven-game homestand to open the season 6-1...It was the only time Potomac would win four straight the rest of the first half.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Potomac Nationals left-hander Ross Detwiler makes his second start of the season opposite Kinston Indians right-hander Steven Wright...In his first outing of the year, Detwiler struck out a career-high seven Salem Avalanche batters en route to five scoreless innings and a 6-1 win...The former first-round draft choice from last season has worked six straight scoreless frames dating back to his lone relief appearance with the Washington Nationals in Atlanta where he also recorded his first Major League strikeout of current Washington outfielder Willie Harris...Wright, a former second-round pick out of the University of Hawaii, makes his 2008 debut after going 3-2 with a 7.13 ERA in 13 starts with Kinston a year ago...The 23-year-old made two starts against the P-Nats a season ago...On July 17, he pitched three scoreless innings, giving up only two hits and striking out four...On August 22, Potomac touched him up for three runs (two earned) on six hits in just three innings.
FRIDAY NIGHT FEVER: The Potomac Nationals offense heated up after consecutive one-run victories, out-slugging the Kinston Indians 12-5...The P-Nats set season highs for runs scored (12), hits (12), at-bats in an inning (8 in the 2nd), runs in an inning (4 in the 2nd and 5th), hits in an inning (4 in the 5th), and home runs in a game (2)...All nine batters recorded at least one hit.
BAEZ'S BIG NIGHT: Edgardo Baez came into last night's contest just 3-for18 (.211) to open the season...the 22-year-old had a big night, going 2-for-3 with a double, three-run homer, four RBI, three runs scored and also drew a walk...The four RBI and three runs scored were both season highs for a Potomac hitter...Of his five hits one year, four have gone for extra bases including three doubles and a home run (.524 SLG).
LIGHTING UP THE SCOREBOARD: The Potomac Nationals offense leads the Carolina League in home runs with six and is second to the Frederick Keys in total runs scored with 34...Marvin Lowrance is seventh in the league with a .391 batting average...Chris Marrero is tied with Winston-Salem's Javier Colina and Frederick's Matt Wieters in home runs with two.
BULLPEN BLANKING: The Potomac Nationals bullpen scoreless innings streak came to an end last night as Kinston scratched across a pair of runs against Cory VanAllen in the top of the third...Prior to Jared Goedert's RBI single, the P-Nats 'pen had not allowed a run in 18 consecutive innings.
FIRST FOR EVERYTHING: Kinston Indians catch Alex Castillo's two-out, two-run home run off of Cory VanAllen in the bottom of the fourth was the first surrendered by a Potomac Nationals pitcher this season...The P-Nats were the last pitching staff in the CL to surrender a long ball.
PFITZ LIKE A GLOVE: The Potomac Nationals have won 12 straight games at home dating back to last season...The P-Nats ended '07 by sweeping their final eight-game homestand with Myrtle Beach and Lynchburg...Potomac has outscored its opponent 60-22 over that span...Nationals' pitching has allowed just 1.92 runs per nine innings during the streak.
HOME AWAY FROM HOME: With last night's win, the Potomac Nationals have already matched last season's win total against the Kinston Indians at Pfitzner Stadium...In 2007 the Indians owned the Pfitz, putting up an 8-1 record...The K-Tribe outscored the P-Nats 76-39 and won seven straight before the Nationals claimed their only win on July 24, 4-3.
