Omaha Beef News Release
Thursday, May 27, 2004 â Omaha, Nebraska - Being a police officer isn't easy, but it sure helps when you are a football player on the side. Omaha's own Dan Potmesil has had a wealth of experience in both areas.
An Omaha native, Potmesil graduated from Roncolli High School and continued his education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. As a student-athlete, Dan was honored as Second Team All-NCC and First Team All-Midwest Region, demonstrating his skills on the field. It was during his days at UNO when Dan decided law enforcement was the path for him. "I didn't always want to be a police officer," said Potmesil, "but things just seemed to go in that direction during college."
The Deputy Sheriff has been employed by Sarpy County for two and half years. "The best part about my job is definitely getting to help people," said Potmesil. But as most people know, things aren't always enjoyable in the life of a law enforcement officer. Often times you get both ends of the spectrum. "You get to see the best and the worst sides of people," commented Potmesil. "You see things you don't really want to see and wonder how people can do that to each other."
But Potmesil has an advantage over the bad guys. "My size definitely doesn't hurt me being a police officer," the 6-5, 350-pound offensive linemen laughed. Staying in shape and being active while playing for the Omaha Beef also helps Potmesil in his adventures in law enforcement. However, being psychically fit isn't the only aspect of playing for the Omaha Beef he enjoys.
Potmesil enjoys the camaraderie among the players. "I really like all the guys on the team and it's still so much fun for me to play football.
Now in his fifth year for the Beef, Potmesil enjoys what he does, both on and off the field. "I feel really fortunate to be here in Omaha."
