\'Cats travel to Rupp for key divisional tilt

May 27, 2004 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Evansville BlueCats News Release

In what figures to be a very tight game, the Evansville Bluecats will travel to Rupp Arena this Saturday, May 29th to face divisional rival the Lexington Horsemen. The contest will be crucial in a topsy-turvy Atlantic North division in which only 1 loss separates the top from the bottom. A Bluecats win, coupled with a Ft. Wayne victory over the Show-Me Believers would put all the teams in the division at 4 losses.

Look for the Bluecats to send a heavy dose of Michael Cosey, who ran for a franchise record 107 yards in his Bluecat debut last year against the Horsemen. Cosey (4th in the NIFL in rushing yards, scoring and touchdowns) and the ‘Big Fish' will take their 8th-ranked rushing offense up against the 22nd ranked rushing defense of the Horsemen. When Evansville decides to take it to the air, quarterback Ramon Robinson will set his sights on reliable receiving targets John Gordon (6th in NIFL with 569 yards receiving) and Demetrius Doss (leads team in receptions with 42).

On the defensive side of the ball, the ‘Cats league leading defensive line (1st with 17 sacks) led by Ron Cook-5th in the league in sacks-will try to put pressure on one of the league's best signal-callers in quarterback Dusty Bonner. Bonner, the league's 4th best with a 106.8 passer rating will be looking to hook up with any of 3 explosive receivers in Dougie Allen, Chad Spencer (team's leader in receptions, receiving yards and TDs) and Martez Johnson (also the team's leading rusher). The defensive backfield will try to shut these and the other Horsemen receivers down with standout veteran Scotty Stewart and rookie Matt Jackson, responsible for 3 turnovers in his 1st 2 games as a pro.

The special teams will again look for answers to their kickoff coverage problems, but that will be no easy task as they face the 3rd best return team in the league. The Horsemen return team is led by the 1-2 punch of Dougie Allen and Martez Johnson, who both average over 20 yards per return. The duo combined for 184 return yards in last week's victory over the Atlantic City Card Sharks, including a 48-yarder by Johnson to give the Horsemen the lead with 1:12 remaining in the game and 45-yard return by Allen to set up the game-winning touchdown.

The Bluecats will head to Rupp on Saturday morning and will again be looking to go over .500 for the 1st time in team history. For those who want to cheer "The Fish" on in person, limited seating is still available for the fan bus. For more information, call the Bluecats office ASAP at 812-491-9401. The game will also air on GOLD WYNG 95 (94.9 FM) and on the worldwide web at www.robertstadium.com with pre-game beginning at 6:00 PM CDT and kickoff set for 6:30 PM CDT.
