Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - One night removed from having their three-game win streak snapped, the Stockton Ports got back on track Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. The Ports scored in each of the first five innings as they earned a 6-3 win over the San Jose Giants, evening their four-game series at a game apiece.
The Giants jumped in the run column first as Christian Arroyo homered off Ports starter Matt Stalcup, his sixth hit in as many at-bats to give San Jose the initial 1-0 lead. It was the only run allowed by Ports starter Matt Stalcup, who received a no-decision after going four innings and allowing two hits.
Stockton would go on to score the next six runs in the contest beginning in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded and one out, Giants starter Keury Mella (3-2) hit Tyler Marincov to bring in a run and tie the game at 1-1.
In the bottom of the second, B.J. Boyd singled to open the frame and Franklin Barreto followed with an RBI double to give the Ports a 2-1 advantage. With two on and two out in the third, Boyd delivered an RBI single to right to make it a 3-1 game. It was the final run allowed by Mella, who would suffer the loss after going three innings and allowing three runs on four hits while walking two.
Luis Ysla took over for San Jose in the fourth and gave up three straight hits to open the frame, a single to Brett Vertigan, a double to Branden Cogswell and an RBI single to John Nogowski that stretched the Stockton lead to 4-1. In the fifth, the Ports got three straight two-out hits. Boyd singled, Barreto drove him in with an RBI double to left and Vertigan followed with an infield single to the left side on which Baretto aggressively rounded third and scored, making it a 6-1 ballgame.
Ysla went three innings and allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out four.
Lou Trivinio (7-4) came on in relief of Stalcup to start the fifth and would go three scoreless innings and pick up the win, allowing two hits while striking out two. Trivino retired the final seven batters he faced.
Sam Bragg entered the game to pitch the eighth and gave up a leadoff double to Jeff Kebernus. After recording back-to-back strikeouts, Bragg walked Seth Harrison and then gave up a groundrule double to Arroyo on which Kobernus scored. Juan Perez followed with an infield single that scored Harrison and cut the Stockton lead to 6-3. Arroyo attempted to round third and score in the Perez infield single but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. Bragg allowed two runs on three hits in his lone inning of work.
Brendan McCurry (SV, 15) entered to pitch the ninth inning and gave up a leadoff single to Angel Villalona. Two batters later, McCurry hit Daniel Carbonel to bring the possible-tying run to the plate in Kobernus, who hit into a game-ending 6-3 double-play. McCurry notched his 15th save of the season for Stockton to keep him tied for the league lead.
The Ports and Giants play the third game of their four-game set on Thursday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Kyle Finnegan (5-4, 5.15 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by San Jose right-hander Ray Black (1-0, 3.60 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
