San Jose Giants News Release
STOCKTON, CA - The Stockton Ports scored in each of the first five innings en route to a 6-3 victory over the San Jose Giants on Wednesday evening at Banner Island Ballpark. The Giants trailed by a 6-1 margin before scoring twice in the eighth and then bringing the potential tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but their comeback effort would fall short. San Jose (32-44) and Stockton have now split the first two games of the series.
Christian Arroyo (2-for-3, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) hit a solo home run and later added an RBI double to lead the Giants offensively. Jeff Kobernus (2-for-4, 2B) also produced a multi-hit game, but San Jose hit into three double plays in the loss.
Arroyo gave the Giants an early 1-0 lead when he smacked an opposite-field solo homer to right center in the top of the first. Arroyo's home run was his third of the season.
The Ports though immediately answered with a run in the bottom of the first against San Jose starter Keury Mella. A four-pitch walk to Brett Vertigan started the frame before John Nogowski singled with one out. Mella then plunked Matt Chapman to load the bases. Tyler Marincov was up next and he was also hit by a pitch to bring home the tying run for Stockton. Mella did limit the damage in the inning as the right-hander retired the next hitter, Michael Soto, on a pop out before Beau Taylor grounded out.
The Ports took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second as B.J. Boyd led off with a single and immediately scored when the next batter, Franklin Barreto, doubled off the wall in deep left center. Then in the third, Marincov was again hit by a pitch before stealing second and scoring on Boyd's two-out single to make it 3-1.
Mella (3-2) was saddled with the loss after yielding three runs (all earned) on four hits over the first three innings. He walked two, hit three batters and did not record a strikeout.
Stockton kept the pressure on with three more runs over the fourth and fifth innings against reliever Luis Ysla (3 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO) to push their lead to 6-1. In the bottom of the fourth, Vertigan singled, Branden Cogswell doubled and then Nogowski blooped an RBI single down the left field line. Then in the fifth, Boyd singled with two outs and scored when Baretto blasted an RBI double off the fence in right center. Vertigan then delivered an RBI single to make it 6-1.
The Giants managed a pair of singles in the fifth, but failed to score before going down 1-2-3 in the sixth and seventh innings. Still trailing by a 6-1 score, San Jose then rallied in the top of the eighth. Kobernus led off with a double down the left field line. A one-out passed ball moved Kobernus to third before Seth Harrison drew a two-out walk. Arroyo was up next and he ripped an RBI double to deep right center as Kobernus scored and Harrison moved to third. Juan Perez followed with a high chopper to second base and beat the throw to first for an infield single. Harrison scored to bring the Giants to within 6-3, but Arroyo, who also attempted to score on the play, was easily thrown out at the plate by first baseman Michael Soto to end the inning.
San Jose threatened in the top of the ninth as Angel Villalona led off with a single before Daniel Carbonell was hit by a pitch with one out, but Kobernus, as the potential tying run, grounded into a game-ending double play.
Lou Trivino (7-4) earned the win out of the Ports bullpen after tossing three scoreless innings from the fifth through the seventh. Trivino allowed two hits, walked one and struck out two. Brendan McCurry pitched the top of the ninth for his league-leading 15th save.
