Stockton Ports News Release
MODESTO, Ca.b- The Ports knocked around a season-high 15 hits and got a clutch performance from Aaron Cohn on the mound in extra innings as Stockton evened their series with the Nuts with a 5-4 win in 11 innings on Wednesday night at John Thurman Field in Modesto.
With three hits in the top of the third inning, the Ports (27-50) took an early lead against Modesto starter Michael Morales. Ramon Martinez got the inning started with a one-out double and moved to third when Jalen Greer reached on an infield single. Danny Bautista then singled to right field to score Martinez, giving the Ports a 1-0 lead.
After the Nuts (38-39) evened the score on an RBI single by Walking Cabrera in the fourth, the Ports reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth. Wilson Alvarez and T.J. Schofield-Sam hit back- to-back one-out doubles to give the Ports a 2-1 lead, and Marcos Betancourt followed a strikeout with a double down the left field line to bring Schofield-Sam home giving the Ports a 3-1 lead.
The Nuts came back to tie the game with single two-out tallies in the sixth and seventh against Stockton reliever Serafino Brito. The Cal League's RBI leader Robert Perez, Jr. cut the Ports' lead in half with a solo home run in the sixth, and Amador Arias tied the game at three in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out single up the middle to score David Shaeffer who doubled to lead off the frame.
In the top of the ninth, the Ports were able to string three more hits together to take the lead.
Junior Perez reached on a one-out bunt single and reached second base on a single up the middle by Greer. Bautista then came through again for the Ports with a single off the body of Modesto reliever Jorge Benitez to score Perez from second and give the Ports a 4-3 lead.
With the Ports one out away from finishing the game in the ninth, the Nuts forced extra innings in dramatic fashion. With two outs and nobody on, Freuddy Batista came off the bench to pinch hit for Brett Rodriguez and hit the first pitch he saw from Ports reliever Robin Vazquez out of the ballpark to left center field to tie the game at four.
After a scoreless tenth, the Ports took the lead again in the eleventh. With Jhoan Paulino at second base to start the inning, Max Muncy doubled to right field to drive home the go-ahead run and give the Ports a 5-4 lead.
After holding the Nuts off the board in the tenth, Aaron Cohn made the one-run lead stand with a scoreless bottom of the 11th to secure the victory for Stockton.
Cohn (1-3) earned his first win as a Port with a stellar performance, retiring all six batters he faced and stranding the winning run in scoring position in the tenth and the tying run in the 11th. Brayan Perez (1-1) took the loss for Modesto, surrendering an unearned run on three hits in the top of the 11th.
The Ports and Nuts continue their series with game three on Thursday at John Thurman Field with first pitch at 7:05 pm.
