July 7, 2022 - California League (CalL)
San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants saw their seven-game road winning streak snapped on Wednesday night with a lopsided 13-2 loss to the Fresno Grizzlies at Chukchansi Park. The 13 runs allowed matched a season-high as San Jose's six-game win streak versus Fresno also came to an end. The Giants (46-31, 6-5 second half) and Grizzlies have now split the first two contests in their series this week.
Grant McCray (1-for-4, HR, RBI) hit his 11th home run of the season for San Jose in Wednesday's setback.
Fresno jumped on the Giants early with back-to-back four-run innings in the second and third to build a commanding 8-0 lead. A throwing error on a potential inning-ending double play opened the door for the Grizzlies in the bottom of the second. With runners on first and second and one out, Fresno's Yorvis Torrealba hit a grounder back to San Jose starter Seth Lonsway, who sailed his throw to second base into center field. Instead a possible double play, the error allowed the first run of the night to score for the Grizzlies. Moments later, Lonsway uncorked a wild pitch to score another run before an error on catcher Ronaldo Flores plated the third run of the frame. Then with two outs and the bases empty, Benny Montgomery launched a home run to deep center extending the Fresno lead to 4-0.
The Grizzlies kept the pressure on with four more runs in the bottom of the third. Zach Kokoska led off with a single before a one-out walk to Aiverson Rodriguez put runners on first and second. Torrealba followed with a single to right that loaded the bases and when right fielder Victor Bericoto mishandled the ball for another error, Kokoska was able to score. Adael Amador then singled to chase Lonsway as John Gavin entered from the bullpen, but he promptly walked Montgomery to load the bases. Braxton Fulford was up next and he singled into left plating two more runs for a 7-0 advantage. Juan Guerrero then stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI single to make it 8-0.
The Giants got two of the runs back with single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings, but would get no closer. McCray led off the top of the top of the fourth with a towering 416-foot home run to deep right center. Then in the fifth, Yorlis Rodriguez started the inning with a single, advanced all the way to third on a two-base wild pitch and scored on Hayden Cantrelle's sacrifice fly to bring San Jose within 8-2.
Fresno though came right back with a three-run bottom of the fifth off of San Jose reliever JJ Santa Cruz. A leadoff walk to Rodriguez and a double from Torrealba put runners on second and third with none out. Amador then singled to left to plate Rodriguez and when left fielder Alexander Suarez bobbled the ball for the Giants' fourth error of the night, Torrealba was also able to score. Amador would eventually come home himself on an RBI groundout later in the inning for an 11-2 cushion.
The Grizzlies then capped the scoring with a two-run bottom of the seventh as Guerrero's two-out, two-RBI single pushed the Fresno lead to 13-2.
