Stockton Ports News Release

MODESTO, Calif. - For the first time this season, the Stockton Ports failed to score a run in a ballgame. The Ports were shut out by the Modesto Nuts 2-0 as they were held to just three hits on the night.

The game stayed scoreless through the first four innings. Ports starter Tanner Peters (2-3) escaped a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the first and pitched around a two-out double in the second. Nuts starter Dan Winkler (4-1) didn't allow a hit through the first four innings. The Ports ended up getting their first hit, a single up the middle by Tony Thompson, with two outs in the top of the fifth. Winkler, though, struck out Wade Kirkland to end the inning.

Brian Humphries, who went 3-for-3 on the night, led off the bottom of the fifth with a double to right. David Kandilas came up next and laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Humphries to third. Peters induced a pop-out to short off the bat of Tyler Massey for the second out. Taylor Featherston came up next and hit a grounder to third. Thompson fielded cleanly but threw wide of first, an error that allowed Humphries to score and give the Nuts a 1-0 lead.

Modesto increased its lead to 2-0 in the sixth with a leadoff home run to right from Harold Riggins. It was the final run allowed by Peters, who took the loss after going a season-high seven innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out five.

Winkler went 5.2 innings for Modesto and allowed just one hit while walking three and matching a season-high with nine strikeouts.

Geoff Parker recorded the final out of the sixth and pitched a perfect seventh inning. Leuris Gomez set the side down in order in the eighth.

Scott Oberg (SV, 8) came on to try for the save in the ninth. Oberg walked Max Muncy to start the inning, bringing the possible-tying run to the plate. Josh Whitaker flew out to shallow left and Dusty Robinson lined to second. With two outs, Ryan Delgado came up and singled to center, Stockton's third hit of the ballgame. With two on and two out, Oberg got Myrio Richard to fly to center to end the ballgame.

After dropping two of three to the Nuts, the Ports continue their road trip with a four-game series in Lancaster beginning on Friday night. Sergio Perez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his second start of the season for the Ports, opposed by JetHawks right-hander Brady Rodgers (3-1, 3.38 ERA). First pitch is set for 7 p.m. PDT.
