Bakersfield Blaze News Release
For the third straight night against the San Jose Giants, the Bakersfield Blaze kept it tight for half a game, but watched as the Giants pulled away late, and on Thursday, San Jose used a four-run 6th inning to seal the 6-2 defeat of the Blaze.
The Thirsty Thursday crowd was typically fired up, but the Blaze ran into a buzzsaw in the arm of Giants starter Chris Marlowe (W, 2-0), who ended up going six innings of one run baseball.
For the Giants, the activity started early, stopped for a long stretch, and then popped back up late. Before the fans could grab their dollar beverages, the Giants scored twice -- in the top of the 1st, San Jose put two runners aboard with nobody out, and eventually scored one run on a sacrifice fly by Devin Harris and a second on a Mac Williamson RBI double.
From there, it was a pitchers' duel into the 6th, with Bakersfield's Carlos Contreras (L, 1-4) settling down to toss up four zeroes while striking out six Giants.
In the 6th, however, San Jose pulled away. Contreras retired the leadoff man, but the next two Giants (Myles Schroder and Shawn Payne) followed with a single and double to plate the team's third run of the night. After a strikeout, Jeff Arnold hit a towering flyball down the leftfield line, his third two-run homer of the series, and the Giants went up comfortably, 5-0.
Kyle McMyne was summoned at that point, and he was greeted rudely - a walk of Elliott Blair and a double by Bobby Haney put San Jose up 6-0 into the bottom half.
The Blaze got on the board in the bottom of the 6th, when Juan Silva doubled to lead off the inning, and Juan Silverio doubled him in one out later, but the team was unable to add more in the frame.
In the 8th, the Blaze collected one more on a Marquez Smith base on balls, and another Juan Silverio double, but that would be all the Blaze could muster, as the Giants duo in relief of Jeff Soptic and Josh Osich finished off Bakersfield.
The loss is the eighth in a row for Bakersfield, marking the second time this season the team has dropped 8 straight, and the club falls to a league-worst 8-26 on the year.
With the Blaze happily bidding farewell to the Giants, the team now welcomes the Modesto Nuts to Sam Lynn Ballpark for a four game weekend series that begins on Fireworks Friday. Tickets are going fast, so make to grab them in advance!
