Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Stockton, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes suffered just their second shut-out defeat of the year, falling to the Stockton Ports on Sunday evening by a score of 5-0 at Banner Island Ballpark.

Murphy Smith combined with two other relievers on a five-hit blanking, as the Quakes dropped their third straight game overall.

Quakes' starter Matt Magill struggled with his command and lasted just two innings.

Magill walked a one-out hitter in the first, as Conner Crumbliss reached and eventually scored on Michael Gilmartin's RBI single, making it 1-0.

Mitch LeVier walked to open the second, then moved to second base on a single from Leonardo Gil. Ryan Lipkin followed with a two-run double, putting the Ports up 3-0.

Magill (9-4) would work around a bases-loaded jam without additional damage, but would not come back out for the third inning.

Instead Ryan Acosta came on in relief and despite a sun-aided triple that cost him a run in the third, pitched incredibly well.

Stockton got a run in the third and another in the seventh, building a 5-0 lead.

Acosta would allow just two runs over a season-high 4 1/3 innings.

The Quakes rarely threatened Smith (4-8), who allowed just three hits, two of which came to Rafael Ynoa.

Rancho tried to make a run at it in the ninth, as Stockton reliever Jose Guzman walked back-to-back hitters to open the ninth, then allowed a one-out single to Angelo Songco, loading the bases. With the tying run in the on-deck circle, Rafael Ynoa, who finished with three of the Quakes' five hits, went down swinging for the second out. Wilberto Ortiz would foul out to end the game, leaving the tying run on deck.

The Quakes (23-20, 61-52) will look to rebound on Monday night in Stockton, sending Red Patterson (2-1) to the mound opposite Stockton's James Simmons (1-1) at 7:05pm.

On Thursday, August 11th, the Quakes will return to The Epicenter, opening a seven-game home stand. Thursday is another Buffalo Wild Wings Thirsty Thursday. Game time is 7:05pm. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com.
