Portland Winterhawks Fall 9-3 in Spokane

The Portland Winterhawks (22-8-0-3) dropped a 9-3 decision in Spokane Wednesday against the Chiefs (15-9-2-2).

Spokane scored five goals in the first period, getting tallies from Collin Valcourt, Mitch Holmberg, Tyler Johnson, Kenton Miller and a power play goal from Steven Kuhn.

Ryan Johansen got Portland on the board nine minutes into the second period with his 17th goal of the season. The Chiefs then got goals from Brenden Kichton and Levko Koper, before Winterhawks defenseman Troy Rutkowski scored a power play goal with 15 seconds left in the second period, making it 7-2 heading into the third period.

Oliver Gabriel scored his seventh of the season 1:04 into the third to make the score 7-3, but Kichton scored his second of the game for Spokane on a power play at the 15:46 mark, followed by Kuhn's second goal of the game at the 16:51 mark to make it 9-3, which would stand as the final.

The Winterhawks return home to host the Prince George Cougars Friday and Saturday in a back-to-back set at the Rose Garden. Saturday's game is the Teddy Bear Toss, one of the most popular promotions of the season, where fans bring teddy bears to the game and throw them on the ice after the Winterhawks' first goal, with the bears later donated to local hospitals and charities.
