Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

The Binghamton Mets rallied from a five-run deficit, but the Portland Sea Dogs scored three times in the 11th to pull out a 10-7, extra-inning victory in Binghamton's home opener at NYSEG Stadium Thursday. The B-Mets have dropped their last two.

Portland (2-2) jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the B-Mets got to bat. In the top of the first, Jeff Corsaletti singled home the Sea Dogs' first run before Dusty Brown brought a run home with an RBI double. An error and Zach Borowiak's two-run single accounted for the other three tallies.

However, Binghamton (1-3) began chipping away in the fourth. Mike Carp and Brett Harper were hit by pitches to begin the frame before Mike Nickeas walked. That loaded the bases for Nic Jackson, who smacked a two-run double down the rightfield line, scoring Carp and Harper with Binghamton's first runs. Three batters later, Miguel Negron drove in Nickeas with a sacrifice fly to pull the B-Mets within two.

Binghamton tied the score in the fifth. After Fernando Martinez led off with a double, Harper drew a one-out walk and Nickeas singled, loading the bases. Martinez then scored on a Brown passed ball before Jackson walked to re-load the bases. Two batters later, Corey Ragsdale walked, forcing home Harper and tying the score.

The B-Mets took a 6-5 lead with a two-out rally in the seventh when Mark Kiger singled, moved to second on a Ragsdale walk and scored on Negron's base-hit to left. However, Portland tied the contest in the eighth when Jacoby Ellsbury singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on back-to-back throwing errors, sending the game into extra innings.

After Jeff Natale's sacrifice fly put Portland ahead 7-6 in the top of the tenth, Carp answered with a two-out solo homer off Beau Vaughn (1-0) in the bottom of the frame. Portland responded with three off Carlos Muñiz (1-1) in the top of the 11th, with Borowiak bringing home the go-ahead run on a squeeze play before Corsaletti singled, scoring two more.

Friday, the B-Mets play the second game of their four-game series against Portland. Michael Devaney ('06: 12-5, 2.13) will get the start for Binghamton against Charlie Zink ('06: 9-4, 4.03) of Portland. Game time is 7:05 p.m. from NYSEG Stadium with the radio broadcast starting at 6:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

Notes: the game took 4:40 to play, nine minutes shy of tying the record for longest B-Mets game in terms of time...both teams stranded 14 runners...Sea Dogs pitchers walked 11 and hit two batters...Binghamton's now 8-8 in home openers, losing four of their last five.
