Binghamton, New York - Hudson Potts launched a three-run homer and Tyreque Reed crushed a grand slam giving the Portland Sea Dogs (35-41) a series-opening 11-3 win over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (31-45) on Monday at Mirabito Stadium in Binghamton, New York.
Four runs came around to score for the Sea Dogs in the top of the first inning against Rumble Ponies starter Jose Chacin. Stephen Scott worked a one-out walk and Christian Koss singled, putting runners on first and second. Potts cleared the bases with a three-run blast, giving Portland a 3-0 lead. One out later, David Hamilton collected a home run of his own, a solo shot to increase the Sea Dogs lead to 4-0.
The Rumble Ponies responded with a run in the bottom of the first against Sea Dogs starter Brian Van Belle. Brandon McIlwain and Brett Baty both singled, and Baty moved up to second on a passed ball by Stephen Scott. Carlos Cortes lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring McIlwain, and putting Binghamton on the board, trailing 4-1.
Both teams went scoreless until the fifth inning. Portland brought in one run with Chacin still on the mound. Nick Sogard led off the inning with a triple. Christian Koss hit a sacrifice fly to right, plating Sogard, and expanding Portland's lead to 5-1.
The offense kept pouring on for the Sea Dogs in the top of the seventh. Wil Dalton doubled and Sogard singled him home to make it 6-1. Stephen Scott drove in Sogard with a base hit, increasing the deficit to 7-1. Koss and Potts singled, loading the bases for Reed, who unleashed a grand slam. It was his sixth homer of the season, his first grand slam of the year, and widened the advantage to 11-1.
Binghamton drove in one run in the bottom of the seventh. Zach Ashford, Cody Bohanek, and Matt Winaker all walked to load the bases. McIlwain hit a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Ashford, making the score 11-2. The Rumble Ponies added one more run in the bottom of the ninth, but the Sea Dogs closed the door on an 11-3 victory.
Van Belle (3-1, 4.29 ERA) tossed 6.0 innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out six in his third win of the year. Chacin (0-5, 7.50 ERA) worked through 6.1 innings, surrendering eight runs on nine hits, walking two, and striking out two in his fifth loss of the season.
