Portland Holds a 1/2 Game Lead in the Wild Card Race

(Portland, ME) - The Portland Sea Dogs celebrated their Fan Appreciation Night and Field of Dreams theme with a 5-1 victory in the twinbill opener, donning relplica uniforms from the 1926 Portland Eskimos. In the nightcap, Trenton scored all four runs on bases loaded walks to beat the Sea Dogs, 4-3.

Chris Smith (6-8) fired six strong innings on three hits and one run to beat Trenton in Game 1. Portland scored five runs off losing pitcher Tyler Clippard (1-1) over four and 2/3 innings.

Jeff Natale smacked two doubles and reached base three times in the opener. Bryan Pritz knocked in two runs with a single in the fifth inning. Iggy Suarez blasted a solo-homer in the third inning - his fourth of the season.

Smith's only blemish came in the sixth inning on J.T. LaFountain's RBI single. Hunter Jones closed out the game with two strikeouts in the seventh inning.

In the nightcap; Jason Brown, Cody Ehlers, Carlos Mendoza and Juan Miranda all drew bases loaded walks to lead the Thunder to their 80th win. Scott Patterson (4-2), allowed the tying run on a two-run single to John Otness in the fourth inning. Charlie Manning fired a perfect seventh inning to earn his first save of the year.

Kyle Jackson (4-9) suffered the loss for Portland, yielding three walks and one run. John Barnes made the start for the Sea Dogs, surrendering seven walks and three runs over four and 1/3 innings.

Otness knocked in all the runs for Portland, picking up an RBI triple in the second.

With a split of the doubleheader and New Hampshire's victory in Connecticut, the Sea Dogs hold a 1/2 game lead over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats for the second playoff spot in the Eastern League's Northern Division.
