Portland Drops the Series Opener in Binghamton 8-3

Binghamton, NY - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (5-5) took advantage of nine Sea Dogs walks, grabbing the opener, 8-3 Monday night at NYSEG Stadium. Portland is now 1-3 on their 7-game roadtrip and 2-2 against the Rumble Ponies this season.

Portland's Nick Longhi led off the ninth with his first Double-A homer and Mike Olt, (2-for-4) collected his first multi-hit in the Red Sox system.

Binghamton's Mickey Jannis (1-0) earned his first win of the season, tossing five innings on six hits, two runs and one strikeout. Kevin McAvoy (0-1) had a tough outing for the Sea Dogs, tying a career-high with seven walks, allowing 4 runs over 3.1 innings.

The game was tied until the Rumble Ponies scored three times in the fourth off McAvoy. David Thompson provided the game-winning hit with a two-run single to left. Binghamton scored in four straight innings, receiving 2 RBI from catcher Colton Plaia and a solo-homer from Kevin Kaczmarski.

Cole Sturgeon went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the fifth and drew a walk in the first. Aneury Tavarez reached base for the 10th straight game and stole his team-leading fourth base of the year.

Portland's bullpen allowed eight hits and four runs, but recorded nine strikeouts. Jeurys Familia made a MLB Rehab Assignment for Binghamton, hurling a perfect sixth.

The Sea Dogs and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies continue their four-game series on Tuesday night from NYSEG Stadium. Portland sends righty Teddy Stankiewicz (0-0, 2.77) to the mound for his third start of the year. Binghamton counters with righty Tyler Pill (1-0, 0.00).
