
Poirier Sets Franchise Record in 7-3 Win over Eagles

The Saint John Sea Dogs (24-15-1-3) beat the Cape Breton Eagles (11-25-3-2) in their return to TD Station on Saturday night. A 7-3 win at TD Station was capped off by a record breaking assist from Jeremie Poirier on the seventh goal of the night. Passing Thomas Chabot as the Sea Dogs defensive scoring leader with his 154th point. Two goals from Philippe Daoust, and goals from Ryan Francis, Riley Bezeau, Josh Lawrence, Olivier Picard, and William Dufour led the Sea Dogs to their win over the Eagles.
Nikolas Hurtubise got the start in net for Saint John, stopping 37 of 40 Eagles shots in the win. Nicolas Ruccia started for Cape Breton, facing 41 Sea Dogs shots and making 34 saves.
Senators prospect Philippe Daoust opened the scoring for the night, scoring unassisted after winning the faceoff outside the offensive zone at 3:16.
Four minutes later, Ryan Francis added one of his own, sending a rocket of a one timer past the Eagles netminder off a pass from Daoust.
Eagles top scorer Ivan Ivan was awarded a penalty shot, and was denied by Hurtubise, who earned himself massive cheers from the crowd with his stop.
The Sea Dogs scored two more goals to round out the period, one from Bezeau from in the crease at 10:11, and the other from Lawrence off a pass from Burns at 14:18.
Shots after the first were 18-11 for Saint John.
The Eagles struck first in the second frame, Ivan Ivan scoring midway through the period.
A highlight reel dish from Peter Reynolds to Olivier Picard shortly after, followed by a bomb of a one-timer from Daoust for his second of the night increased the Sea Dogs lead to 6-1 going into the final period.
Shots after the second were 29-21 for the Sea Dogs.
16 seconds into the final period the Eagles scored their second of the night when Cam Squires picked up a loose puck in front of the Sea Dogs net.
Scoring slowed down for the rest of the game and the teams traded penalties, but it wasn't until 10:09 that the Sea Dogs capitalized on the opportunity. Jérémie Poirier passed the franchise record for most points by a defenseman with an assist on a goal by William Dufour. Thomas Chabot previously held the record at 153.
The Eagles scored one last goal with a little over a minute remaining in the game, but the Sea Dogs won 7-3.
Final shots were 41-40 for Saint John.
