Hockey Canada extended invitations to 21 players today for their training camp in anticipation for the upcoming Under 18 IIHF World Championships in Sochi, Russia. Among the players receiving an invite was Moose Jaw Warrior Brayden Point.

"I was pretty shocked (when I was told about the invitation)," said Point. "I'm obviously excited, it's a big honour to be invited and hopefully I can do my best."

Point was selected 14th overall by the Warriors in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft. Last year he finished fourth in the league in rookie scoring, his 24 goals and 57 points was the most any 16 year old (1996 born). He debuted with Moose Jaw at the end of the 2011-2012 regular season, in the 2012 playoffs he had seven goals and ten points in 14 games.

This will be Point's second tour of duty under Canada's Program of Excellence, back in January he was a member of Team Pacific for the 2013 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge held in Quebec.

"It's all of Canada now, as an under-age it's a great opportunity to go to camp and experience this," he said when comparing the Under 17's to the Under 18's. "It was a great feeling getting the call from Pacific (last year); with this being all of Canada it's really exciting."

"I just have to play my game. The reason why I got called was because of the way I play," Point said when asked about trying to standout during the camp. "I'll just try to play that game, work my hardest, and see what happens. I'll accept any role they would give me to make that team."

Seven players from the WHL received invitations, while Vancouver Giants Head Coach Don Hay will serve as Canada's Head Coach. Point is one of six 1996 born players headed to camp this weekend in Toronto.

The World Under 18 Championships begin Thursday, April 18th in Sochi, Russia. Canada is in Group B along with Germany, Slovakia, Sweden, and Switzerland. Canada's first game is against Slovakia on the 18th, April 20th they take on Germany, April 22nd they square off against Switzerland, they finish the preliminary round April 23rd against Sweden, the playoff round starts on the 25th, the bronze and gold medal games are on the 28th.
