Poche's Solid Start and Bats Lead to 8-1 Win

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Snappers starter Jared Poché tied a career-high eight strikeouts and limited Whitecaps bats to just three hits as the Beloit Snappers (47-44) defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps (47-47) by the score of 8-1 Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Poché picked up his third-consecutive win, as the southpaw surrendered just one run in six innings of work. The former Louisiana State University product baffled Whitecaps bats all afternoon as he surrendered his lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a miscommunication play in the outfield after Lazaro Armenteros fielded a fly ball with a runner on third. Armenteros recorded the out, but he and Austin Beck collided which allowed the run to score from third to end the shutout.

Poché lowered his ERA to 4.43 in the outing, and evened his record at 6-6.

The Snappers bats continued their recent surge, as they notched nine hits while plating eight runs and have now won 10 of their last 11 games.

Beloit opened up a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning, at four-consecutive two-out singles led to three runs in the frame. Nick Allen started the two-out rally with a base knock to left, before Armenteros singled to right to put runners at the corners for Beck. Beck picked up his 38th RBI of the year as he single home Allen to put Beloit on top 1-0. On the play, Beck advanced to second on a play at third, however Armenteros was safe. Hunter Hargrove then stepped in and drove a base hit up the middle to score both Armenteros and Beck to up the Snappers lead to 3-0.

In the fifth the Snappers bats picked up where they let off, as Beck and Hargrove led off the frame with back-to-back singles before Logan Farrar laced a two-run double to left to score the duo. After a strikeout to Jesus Lopez and Farrar advanced to third on a wild pitch, Jordan Devencenzi sent a sacrifice fly to center to score Farrar from third to double the Snappers lead to 6-0.

In Poche's final inning in the sixth, he surrendered the lone run, and exited after the inning as Heath Bowers came on to toss the seventh and eighth innings.

For Bowers, he tossed two scoreless frames, inducing six-consecutive in play outs.

The Snappers plated a pair in the top of the eighth, as Whitecaps reliever Oswaldo Castillo plunked two batters and walked Jack Meggs to load the bases before Armenteros walked to bring in a run to give the Snappers a 7-1 lead. Beck added his second RBI of the afternoon with a sac fly to right that scored Meggs to put Beloit on top 8-1.

Wandisson Charles took the mound for the Snappers in the final frame and made quick work of the Whitecaps as he struck out the side and the Snappers took game two of the three-game set.

The Snappers will go for the series sweep with the Whitecaps tomorrow at 6 p.m. CT. Wyatt Marks will get the start for the Snappers in the finale and Dane Myers will start for West Michigan.
