Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Gregori Vasquez, Jonathan Teaney, and Kyle Nelson led the Lake County Captains to a 4-0 three-hit shutout Sunday against the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Will Benson opened the scoring with his team-high 14th home run to help the Captains (12-12, 41-53) tie this three-game series with the Kernels (16-8, 48-45).
Vasquez and Bryan Sammons matched zeroes over the first six innings of Sunday's contest. Vasquez only gave up one hit and two walks in a shutout start. Sammons yielded just one hit and three walks within his first six frames.
Lake County secured a 2-0 lead in the top of the seventh. Benson tagged Sammons for a one-out solo shot to put the Captains on the scoreboard. Gianpaul Gonzalez added a run of his own after a Jesse Berardi double when the ball got loose during a play at the plate.
The Captains scored two more runs during the ninth for a 4-0 advantage. Nolan Jones hit an RBI single that brought in Berardi. Jose Vicente followed by driving in Todd Isaacs while reaching via error.
The win went to Vasquez (3-5) while the loss was charged to Sammons (5-5). Teaney posted perfect seventh and eighth innings for his third hold. Nelson conceded a pair of singles within the ninth in a non-save situation.
