Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio - Dayton's Lorenzo Cedrola collected four hits and the Dragons scored five runs in the third inning as they held on to defeat the Kane County Cougars 5-3 on Sunday afternoon. A crowd of 7,624 at Fifth Third Field saw the Dragons win their third straight game and even their record in the second half at 12-12.
Dragons starting pitcher Packy Naughton (5-8) earned the win with six strong innings. Naughton stretched his scoreless streak to 24 straight innings without allowing a run before Kane County scored two runs in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Dragons responded by putting together their biggest inning of the month of July in the bottom half of the frame.
With one out in the Dayton third, Andy Sugilio singled to center field and went to second on Cedrola's single to right. Jeter Downs drilled a ground-rule double that bounced over the fence in left-center to bring in Sugilio, and Leandro Santana blooped a single to right to drive in Cedrola and tie the game at 2-2. J.D. Williams walked to load the bases, and Mark Kolozsvary singled to left to drive in Downs and give the Dragons the lead. Mitch Piatnik walked to force in a run and make it 4-2, and Alejo Lopez drove in a run with a fielder's choice ground out to extend the lead to 5-2. Seven straight Dragons batters reached safely in the inning.
Meanwhile, Naughton threw 86 pitches over six innings, allowing six hits and two runs with two walks and three strikeouts. Aaron Quillen tossed a scoreless seventh inning, and Andy Cox worked a scoreless eighth. Cory Thompson retired the first two batters of the ninth before allowing two hits and a run to bring the tying run to the plate, but Thompson got a routine fly out to center field to end the game and notch his fifth save.
The Dragons collected 12 hits. Along with Cedrola's four-hit day, Sugilio and Kolozsvary each had two hits. The Dragons were a solid 5 for 15 (.333) with runners in scoring position, though they stranded 13 runners to match the season high.
With the win, the Dragons moved into a tie for the top seed in the East Division Second Half playoff chase. Four teams have identical records of 12-12.
Up Next: The Dragons (12-12, 43-49) close out the series with Kane County (10-14, 45-48) and the six-game home stand on Monday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Adrian Rodriguez (4-4, 6.83) will start for the Dragons against Kane County's Brian Shafer (5-5, 2.70). A Dayton win would give the Dragons a sweep of the three-game set with Kane County.
Game Broadcast: All Dragons games are broadcast on radio on Fox Sports 980 WONE and on the internet at wone.com. Games are also available on the Dayton Dragons mobile app.
