Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs shut out the Fort Wayne TinCaps 4-0 in the series opener on Saturday night. The Chiefs improved to 12-9 in the second half and 51-40 overall with game two of the series set for 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Peoria starter Johan Oviedo danced out of danger in the top of the third inning. Jack Suwinski lined a one-out single and stole second. Kelvin Melean and Jeisson Rosario both drew two-out walks to load the bases. Oviedo escaped the jam on a Tirso Ornelas fly out to right.
The Chiefs loaded the bases and took the lead in the bottom of the third on TinCaps starter Aaron Leasher. Jose Martinez drew a leadoff walk and Irving Lopez was hit by a pitch with one out. Rayder Ascanio singled to load the bases and Elehuris Montero drove in Martinez on a sacrifice fly to center to get on the board 1-0. Yariel Gonzalez rocketed a three-run homer for his fifth long ball of the season and a 4-0 lead.
Oviedo (5-7) earned the win throwing six scoreless innings on two hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. Robbie Gordon threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings allowing two hits with one walk and one strikeout. Bryan Dobzanski earned the save throwing 1 1/3 innings allowing one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.
Notes... The game started at 8:42 p.m. after a two hour and 12 minute rain delay...The Chiefs recorded their sixth shutout of the season and first since June 23...Andres Luna made his Midwest League debut...Gordon made his Midwest League debut...The Chiefs were outhit 5-3...Peoria is 5-1 wearing specialty jerseys at home...Gonzalez has a seven-game hit streak...The Chiefs are 43-1 when taking a lead into the ninth inning...The series continues against on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. as the Chiefs start RH Paul Balestrieri (5-4, 5.04) against Fort Wayne LH MacKenzie Gore (5-3, 2.79)...There will be helicopter candy drop after the game for kids to grab candy on the field...Sunday is Princess and Pirate day with appearances by Ariel and Moana...PNC Family Sunday features $5 tickets for kids 12 and under...All fans can play catch on the field pre-game in the outfield, starting when gates open...Player autographs are post-game on the concourse and available to all fans...The first 1,000 fans through the gates ages receive a Julio Rodriguez player poster...Seniors 55 and over can get $5 tickets on Senior Sunday...Sunday is also Bark in the Park as fans can bring their dogs to Dozer Park...The broadcast can be heard, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 1:45 p.m. on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive and is also available on the Peoria Chiefs Network on the Tune-In Radio App...The game is also available to subscribers on MiLB.TV.
