TONIGHT:
The Ontario Reign (0-1-0) prepare for Game 2 against the Stockton Thunder (1-0-0) after dropping the first match 3-1 on Friday night. The Thunder outshot the Reign 39-27 and had more than three times the shots of the Reign in the first period (18 shots to Ontario's five). Both teams had three power-play chances, but only Stockton converted for their insurance goal from Ryan Hayes. Ontario finished the 2013-14 season 6-1-0-0 when playing the Thunder at Stockton Arena.
FIRST TASTE:
Just watching these two teams, it's easy to tell there is some built up animosity. On Friday night there were no fighting majors dealt to either team, but there was visible physicality with roughing, slashing, hooking, and cross-checking penalties going out to each side. These teams will have at least three more consecutive games against each other so we can expect the tempers will boil as the series continues.
SPECIAL TEAMS:
In about a month, the Reign have only scored two power-play goals (since Mar. 21) on 32 opportunities. For the past five games (playoff and regular season), the power-play unit has been kept off the board completely. On the flip side, the penalty kill has only allowed five goals since Mar. 21 on 47 short-handed chances.
DEFENSEMAN OF THE YEAR:
Matt Register ended his 2013-14 ECHL season with two league honors; being name to the All-ECHL First Team (all-star team), and being recognized as the ECHL Defenseman of the Year. This was the first time a Reign player had been named to the First Team and the first on-ice related year-end award received by a Reign player (skater or goalie). Register ranked third on the Reign with 44 points (14g, 30a) and second with a +22. He had three game-winning goals, and a shootout winning goal, through the season. On Friday, Register went even through 60 minutes and got one shot on goal.
