Iowa Barnstormers News Release
DES MOINES - The locally-owned Iowa Barnstormers Arena Football Club today announced the team enjoyed an increase in per-game home attendance during the 2009 regular season, finishing with the second-highest attendance in the af2 league for the second consecutive season.
The Barnstormers drew an average of 9,341 fans for the eight home games during the inaugural 2008 season, and topped that by more than 300 fans a night as the team averaged 9,645 fans per game during the recently-completed 2009 regular season. Only the Spokane Shock, who averaged 10,413 fans per game, outpaced the Barnstormers among the 25 af2 franchises.
"Coach Gregory put a championship-caliber team on the field, while the local ownership made a commitment to keeping ticket prices affordable for Iowans," said General Manager John Pettit in describing the team's recipe for drawing strong crowds in spite of tough economic conditions. "We have the best fans in arena football and they provide our team with a tremendous home field advantage going into the playoffs."
That home field advantage will be on display Friday night, as the second-seeded Barnstormers (12-4) play host to the seventh-seeded Manchester Wolves (7-9) in an opening round American Conference Divisional playoff game.
Pettit also announced that the team has partnered with Toyota of Des Moines to provide free rally towels to the first 5,000 fans at Friday's game. Kick-off starts at 7:05 p.m. at Wellmark Field at Wells Fargo Arena, while the Barnstormers' famous pre-game tailgate party will start at 4:30 pm in Iowa Hall of Pride parking lot just south of Hy-Vee Hall.
Tickets for the opening round of af2 playoffs can be purchased for as low as $14 per ticket by calling the Barnstormers front office at 515.633.2255 or by going online to www.theiowabarnstormers.com.
