Pittsburgh Xplosion News Release
PITTSBURGH -- Led by Ike Jefferson's 28 points, the Pittsburgh Xplosion defeated the Toledo Ice 126-110 at Mellon Arena. Former Point Park University star DeVaughn Halsel had a double-double with 19 points and 19 rebounds and Jason Benson added 18 to help lift the Xplosion's record to 17-11. Toledo slipped to 14-12 despite 41 points from ABA All Star Jamel Staten. The game was 85-85 at the end of the third quarter but Pittsburgh outscored Toledo 41-25 in the decisive final quarter.
The Xplosion had a special guest at the game -- Lynn Swann, a legendary wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers dynasty that won four Super Bowls. Swann, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, watched the game from a courtside seat and briefly addressed more than 1,900 fans in Pittsburgh, expressing his support for the city's new ABA franchise. Swann is a candidate for Pennsylvania governor.
Swann was welcomed at the game by the Xplosion's majority owner Freddie Lewis, Xplosion CEO Richard Hersperger and Dwayne Woodruff, an Xplosion owner and Swann's teammate when the Steelers won Super Bowl XIV.
Pittsburgh and Toledo are on track for berths next month in the ABA playoffs. The teams meet again Monday, Feb. 20 at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh. The game tips off at 7 p.m. For more information on the Pittsburgh Xplosion and the ABA, visit www.pittsburghxplosion.com and www.abalive.com.
