Vancouver Canadians News Release
(PK Park - Eugene, OR) - Three Canadians pitchers helped combine to shutout the South Division as neither division could bring a run across to score as the 2014 Northwest League All-Star Game goes down as the lowest scoring mid-summer classic in Minor League Baseball history on Wednesday out at PK Park in Eugene, Oregon.
Canadians LHP Jairo Labourt got the start for the North Division pitching a scoreless bottom of the 1st inning allowing one hit and striking out one. Labourt was one of three Canadians pitchers to take to the mound as RHP Andrew Case went 1 2/3 innings of work striking out three and RHP Joe Lovecchio went a scoreless inning of work striking out two.
Offensively, Vancouver had four players take swings against the South Division and went a collective 0-for-8 with Spokane Indians 3B Jose Trevino leaving Eugene as the only player in the game with multiple hits (2-for-4 with two doubles).
The North nearly opened the scoring in the top of the 4th inning when Spokane Indians 2B Seth Spivey singled to left and advanced over to third base as he stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error from Boise C Justin Marra. With Spivey at third base and teammate 3B Luke Tendler on at first (walk), Canadians 1B Ryan McBroom would watch as Spivey tried to steal home unsuccessfully to end the threat with the Vancouver slugger still in the box.
Last year's game in Everett, WA was a stark contrast to Wednesday's combined shutout as 2013 saw the South come from behind to top the North 8-7 with Canadians 3B Justin Atkinson and 1B L.B. Dantzler hitting home runs in the inaugural mid-summer classic for the Northwest League.
The 2015 Northwest League All-Star Game venue has yet to be formally announced.
The players from the Vancouver Canadians Baseball Club that took part in the 2014 All-Star Game will now head to Pasco, WA on Thursday to meet up with the other roster players from the C's who have been in Vancouver preparing to depart for Tri-City on Thursday, August 6th. The Canadians will open up a crucial three-game series in Pasco, WA on Thursday, August 7th at 7:15pm as Vancouver (5-8) remains two games back of Everett (7-6) in the North Division with just 25 games remaining in the 2014 regular season.
The C's return to Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium on Sunday, August 10th at 5:05pm to open up a six-game home stand vs. Tri-City (August 10-12) and Everett (August 13-15).
