Pitching Propels Hooks to Series Win

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS-Facing three of the most talented pitchers in the league, Frisco (10-12, 51-41), was held to only one hit, as the 'Riders fell to Corpus Christi (15-7, 52-40) 5-2 Sunday night at Whataburger Field. Frisco's lone hit came on an RBI triple by Jurickson Profar in the top of the sixth.

For the third time in the series, Corpus Christi recorded the first tally. Andy Simunic was first to reach against Cody Buckel (1-4), after Jurickson Profar committed an error in the bottom of the first. Simunic moved to second on a fielder's choice, and came home on an RBI single by Jon Singleton.

The Hooks first baseman would add his second RBI in the fifth. Austin Wates began the inning with a base hit off Buckel, while Wates advanced to third on a fielder's choice and a wild pitch. With a runner 90 feet from home, Singleton hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

Hitless against Hooks starter Jarred Cosart through the first five innings, Jurickson Profar gave the RoughRiders their first hit and first run in the sixth. On a 1-1 pitch from Cosart, Profar tripled over the head of Hooks centerfielder Drew Muren to score Leury Garcia from first. Two batters later, Profar scored on a fielder's choice by Engel Beltre, to make it 2-2.

Corpus Christi retook the lead in the sixth (3-2) on a sacrifice fly by Muren, before Austin Wates created some separation with a 2-run homer to left. It was the outfielder's second longball of the series.

On in relief of Cosart, the duo of Kevin Chapman (6-3) and Jason Stoffel tossed 3.1 scoreless innings. Neither allowed a hit.

Chapman earned the win for Corpus Christi, striking out a pair over 2.1 innings. Cody Buckel suffered the loss for Frisco, tossing five innings and allowing three earned runs. He walked three and struck out four. Jason Stoffel picked up his 15th save, working a perfect ninth.

Frisco returns to Dr Pepper Ballpark Monday night, when the RoughRiders battle the San Antonio Missions. Rangers starting pitcher Neftali Feliz (--,--) will make a rehab start for the RoughRiders, and is expected to pitch the first two innings. He will be opposed by the Missions Josh Geer (3-2, 4.32). First pitch is slated for 7:00, and can be heard on KKGM 1630 AM or on ridersbaseball.com. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:30.
