MISSOULA, MONT - The Missoula Osprey (29-25, 10-6) won their fourth consecutive game with a 4-2 victory in the series opener in Grand Junction (30-25, 10-7) Monday from Suplizio Field.
Grand Junction plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the second when Daniel Montano drove a solo home run to right off Osprey starter Deyni Olivero (3-3).
The Osprey wasted no time in tying the game in the top of the third as David Sanchez led off with a double against Rockies starter Ryan Rolison. Buddy Kennedy lined a single to left to tie the game 1-1.
It took until the bottom of the fifth for the Rockies to get back on the board as Joey Bartosic led off with a single. Christopher Novarro followed him with a double to put two men in scoring position. Wil Golsan grounded out to score Bartosic and pushed the Rockies back in front 2-1.
Zachery Almond led off the top of the sixth with a single and was followed by an Eddie Hernandez single. Brandon Leyton singled to left to score Almond to tie the game. Cesar Garcia followed with a double to bring home Hernandez and give the Osprey their first lead 3-2 after six.
Olivero tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth for Missoula to keep the lead as the Osprey starter allowed just four hits and two runs. Blake Workman entered out of the bullpen for Missoula and tossed a scoreless seventh before Missoula's offense added an insurance run in the eighth.
To lead off the inning, Zack Shannon singled while Leyton doubled to put to men on with one out. Garcia drove in his second run of the game on a single to give the Osprey their largest lead of the game 4-2. Workman shut down the Rockies in the eighth with a scoreless inning to preserve the 4-2 lead.
Grand Junction threated in the bottom of the ninth after Niko Decolati reached on an error and Montano singled, but Workman struck out Christopher Novarro to end the game and give the Osprey a 4-2 win in the series opener. Will Tribucher (2-2) is tagged with the loss after allowing two runs out of the bullpen.
