Pitching carries Warthogs to a 3-2 Win over Myrtle Beach

Winston-Salem - After five combined runs in the first three innings, the Warthogs pitching staff settled into a groove to preserve a 3-2 win over Myrtle Beach on a brisk night at Ernie Shore Field. With the win, Winston-Salem moves into a virtual first place tie with the Pelicans. The Warthogs are 2-1, while the Pelicans sit at 3-2.

Myrtle Beach started the scoring in the top of the second, as three of the Pelicans' first four batters reached on a hit. J.D. Roberts drove in two runs with a one-out double, bringing in Diory Hernandez and Clint Sammons.

The Warthogs responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. The Warthogs loaded the bases in the inning with the aid of one hit and two walks against starting pitcher Jairo Cuevas. With two outs and the bases loaded, the Warthogs' number nine batter, Ryan McCarthy was hit by a pitch, bringing in Micah Schnurstein for the Warthogs' first run of the game.

The Warthogs added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Aaron Cunningham led off with a line drive single, then scored on a David Cook double. Two batters later, Cole Armstrong drove Cook in with an RBI double to center field.

Warthogs starting pitcher Derek Rodriguez (1-0) picked up the win for the Warthogs, giving up two earned runs on six hits over five innings. Rodriguez walked one and struck out five. Carlos Torres worked two perfect innings in relief of Rodriguez, while Brian Omogrosso picked up the save with two scoreless innings. Torres struck out two batters. Omogrosso struck out four while walking one.

Pelicans starter Jairo Cuevas (0-1) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits over four innings. Cuevas walked two and struck out six.

The Warthogs and Pelicans resume their four-game series with game two on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. at Ernie Shore Field. Right-hander Justin Cassel will start for the Warthogs against Pelicans right-hander James Parr.
