Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

SARASOTA, FL (July 20, 2005) - It's a different pitcher each night, but the same result for the Fort Myers Miracle as they got another fantastic outing by a starter and a solid performance out of the bullpen in a 2-0 victory over the Sarasota Reds on Wednesday night at Ed Smith Stadium.

Justin Jones watched his teammates shut down the Brevard County Manatees over the last four days and Jones continued the domino effect of quality starts by hurling 7.1 shutout innings allowing three hits while walking three and striking out five in picking up his third victory of the season. Along with the five strikeouts, he got 12 ground ball outs and just five fly outs as he dominated the Reds. The Miracle have allowed just five runs in their last four games and it's the 10th shutout of the season.

Jones left in the eighth inning after giving up a one out single to Hector Tiburcio and walking Javon Moran. Julio DePaula, who had allowed just two earned runs in his last 19 innings, got Chris Dickerson to bounce back to the mound for the second out. After a walk to Joey Votto loaded the bases, he got Jason Vavao to ground out to short.

In the ninth, after the lead off man reached on an error, DePaula retired the next three batters, the last two on strikeouts to earn his third save of the season.

The Miracle offense, which has done just enough to earn victories of late, did the same on Wednesday. It almost looked like they would squander another opportunity. In the seventh Angelo Fermin had a one out single to right-center. Scott Whitrock then doubled to right-center that put runners at second and third. Ron Perodin then struck out, but Matt Tolbert, who was one for his last 13, saved the day when he hit a 2-2 pitch off the wall in right field to drive in both runs. Whitrock finished the night 2-4 with two doubles and a run scored.

Brock Peterson extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single to left in the fourth inning.

The same two teams meet Thursday night at Hammond Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Tristan Crawford (4-2, 3.42) to the hill against the Reds RHP Jim Paduch (2-6, 4.29).
