Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

Not even Steve Trachsel, in St. Lucie for a major league injury rehab start, could stop the streaking Dodgers, who escaped with a 4-3 win Wednesday afternoon at Tradition Field. Tony Abreu went 3-5 and scored twice to lead the Dodgers to their fourth straight win, matching their season long winning streak. Brian Pilkington earned the win in relief to improve his record to 4-6 and Greg Miller made his first start in Vero Beach since his remarkable 2003 season. The series continues Friday night at 7:00 PM in St. Lucie.

Trachsel lasted 2 2/3 innings and had difficulty with his control early on. Abreu singled against him to start the game and one out later Matt Kemp singled to put runners at first and second. Abreu then scored on a passed ball to give Vero and early lead. After going down in order in the second, Chin-lung Hu reached on an infield single with out in the third against Trachsel. Cole Bruce also singled to knock him out of the game. Ryan Cullen relieved Trachsel and Cory Dunlap greeted him with a single to make it 2-0.

Meanwhile Miller continued his comeback from shoulder surgery. His electric arm tallied two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings, but also four walks. He allowed just one single and no runs scored against him. Pilkington followed with 5 2/3 innings during which he surrendered only three hits and two runs (one earned), while striking out six and walking just one.

The Dodgers added a run in the sixth. Bruce led off with a triple and Dunlap doubled him home. In the ninth, Abreu singled with one out to give him eight hits in the last two games. Hu followed with a single, but was caught trying to steal second. But with two outs and a 2-2 count, Kemp singled to left, scoring Abreu.

That turned out to be a run the Dodgers needed as they took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Mark Alexander, who entered in the eighth, gave up a leadoff homer to Kevin Rios. One out later, Wilson Bautista reached on an infield single and Jonathan Slack walked. Alexander bounced back to strike out Andy Wilson looking and Dante Brinkley swinging.
