Pitching carries Albany past Pilots

Newark NY - The Newark Pilots (8-10) fall to the Eastern Division leading Albany Dutchmen (11-5) by a final of 6-2 on a free admission Friday night at Colburn Park.

Albany took the lead in the first inning on an early single by Joe Purritano (Dartmouth). The lead was supported by two more runs in the top of the fourth. Tyler Orris (Millersville) scored on a wild pitch while Chris Susek (Coastal Carolina) brought in the second run of the inning on a single to center field.

The left handed Pilots starter Justin D'Amato (1-1, St. John Fisher) pitched four innings allowing three runs on six hits while striking out six.

Taylor Hinshaw (Georgia College) broke out of a slump going 3-for-4 with two singles and a double. Along with Hinshaw, Jacob Russell had a good night (University of Kentucky) continuing his hot streak earning two more hits and an RBI.

The Dutchmen's starting pitcher Sean Spicer (2-0, Baylor) held off the battling Pilots only allowing four hits in five innings of work. Helping Spicer earn the win was reliever Dylan Collett ((Keene State) who pitched 3 1/3 allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.

The Pilots tried to rally in the seventh as their first RBI was awarded to Scott Matthews (Washington College). Hinshaw and Russell were the team leaders in hits while the Dutchman's Anthony Marks (Coastal Carolina) went 3-for-4 with Brian Ruhm, Albany's second baseman adding a home run in the top of the sixth.
