Glens Falls Doubles up Mohawks 6-3

June 28, 2013 - Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL)
Amsterdam Mohawks News Release

The Amsterdam Mohawks had their six-game win streak snapped at the hands of the Glens Falls Golden Eagles in a 6-3 decision Friday night at Shuttleworth Park.

Glens Falls had been the last team to defeat the Mohawks, last Friday in Amsterdam. The Golden Eagles pulled off another Friday victory in the Rug City to become the first team in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League to reach 12 victories. Amsterdam fell to 11-10 with the loss while Glens Falls now stands at 12-9.

A four-run first inning rally would be all the offense Glens Falls would need. Josh Anderson (FIU) launched a three-run homer over the Chain Monster in left for his second long-ball in just two games since returning to the league. Anderson went 5-for-5 in his season debut one night earlier and was 2-for-4 in this one including three driven in and a walk.

Raphael Gladu (College Lafleche, Que.) socked an RBI double in the first inning as well and went 2-for-3 with a walk.

Glens Falls was led by their pitching to earn this victory. Amsterdam entered the game leading the league in batting average at .290 and in home-runs with 20. But the Mohawks were limited to just seven hits and also failed to hit a home-run for the first time in six games.

Zach Hopf (St. Peter's) improved to 4-0 with six strong innings. Two of his four wins have come against Amsterdam. Hopf scattered seven hits and allowed three earned runs with one walk and three strikeouts. He had given up just one run in the first five innings of the game but was touched for a couple more in his sixth and final inning.

Reliever Armand Rugel (Stonehill) fired perfect baseball for the last three innings recording nine straight outs, including four whiffs, for his first save.

Dylan Smith (Auburn) led Amsterdam hitters going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Josh Gardiner (Radford) scored two runs and was 1-for-3 with a walk.

After Mohawks starter Logan Fullmer (Maine) was removed after his rocky first inning, reliever Christian Bartholomew (Wake Forest) pitched well from the second through the fifth allowing just two runs that came in his last inning of work, one of which was charged against him after he had left the game.

The game was a rematch of the 2012 PGCBL Championship Series which Amsterdam won 2 games to 0. This season, Glens Falls leads their East Division rivals in the season series 3 games to 1 midway through their scheduled slate of eight games. Glens Falls and Amsterdam cannot meet each other in a Championship rematch because now they are in the same division. But the rivalry continues to be a hotly contested one.

The game was Heroes Night presented by NBT Bank. Free admission was granted to all police, fire, military and EMT personnel and they were honored at different parts of the game throughout the night.

The Mohawks and Golden Eagles will meet next week for back-to-back games in an important East Division showdown with a Tuesday encounter in Glens Falls followed by a Wednesday Fireworks Night contest back at Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam hits the road for their next two games beginning with a Saturday night game at the Utica Brewers. Trey Wingenter (Auburn), a 6'7" righthander, will start for Keith Griffin's team. The Mohawks return home on Monday night against the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs on Keith Griffin tribute night.

Amsterdam hosts two fireworks nights next week sandwiched around the 4th of July. Wednesday, July 3rd is Fireworks Night presented by the Rotary. And Friday, July 5th is the annual ParkFest presented by the Wasserman Foundation with rides and water slides all day long and then another Fireworks Night after the game.

The Glens Falls Golden Eagles return to East Field on Saturday night squaring off with the Albany Dutchmen in a battle of the top two teams in the league.
