May 4, 2023 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Traverse City Pit Spitters News Release
Traverse City, MI- The 2023 Fan Food vote is over and the roaring, hungry crowd has spoken. At the beginning of April, the Pit Spitters called on fans to submit their most creative recipes from a list of ballpark staples for a chance to win a spot on the official Pit Spitters menu. Voting has officially ended, and it's time to announce the winner!
The winner of this year's Fan Food Vote is The Caramel Apple Elephant Ear, created by Billi Darter of Traverse City.
"I am a sweet treat lover, so I knew I had to make the fan food item a dessert," said 2023 Fan Food Vote Winner, Billi Darter. "I love ice cream and caramel, so why not add that with apple pie filling and a cinnamon sugar elephant ear? It will be an irresistibly delicious must have at the ballpark this season!"
The competition was stiff, and The Caramel Apple Elephant Ear barely edged out the BBQ Poutine and French Fry Parfait to be crowned champion. So many delicious choices!
Description of the winning item:
The Caramel Apple Elephant Ear begins with a cinnamon elephant ear, its featured ingredient, and is topped with two scoops of vanilla ice cream, a healthy portion of warm, apple pie filling, with a caramel drizzle pour over. We will definitely be screaming for this creation at the ballpark this summer!
In addition to the Caramel Apple Elephant Ear, team is adding several other new items to the menu:
- The Cherry Mary! You might remember this honorable mention from this year's food vote finalists, and since we loved it so much, we decided to 'Mary' it! See what we did there?
- The 'Nashville Hot' chicken sandwich which will be deep fried to a golden brown, tossed in Nashville hot sauce, topped with pickles, and served on a brioche bun. Hope you like it spicy!
- A taste of the border is coming to the concourse with the debut of a taco cart! Authentic street tacos will be available this season with all the fixins'!
Fans can expect even more delicious food items to make their debut this season, as well as options from local vendors including, Cheboygan Brewing Company, Great Lakes Chips, Tolman's Meats, Pop Daddy Pretzels, Bonobo Winery, Short's Brewing Company, Little Town Jerky Co., and Traverse City Whiskey Company.
"We want to provide fans with an experience at every game, and food is an important part of coming to Turtle Creek Stadium," said Food and Beverage Manager Katie Johnson. "Great food is a priority for us at every game, and because of that we work with many Northern Michigan companies to produce this All-Star menu!"
The Pit Spitters begin their 5th season Monday, May 29th, at home against the Rockford Rivets. Season ticket packages are on sale now, and individual tickets and promotions are now available.
