Portland Pirates News Release
The Pirates played three road games last week posting 2-0- 1-0 record and extending their point streak to nine games (6-0-3-0) and their road point streak to five games (3-0-2-0). The weekend action began on Friday in Hartford as the Wolf Pack topped the Pirates 4-3 in OT. The Pirates answered the OT loss with back-to-back wins in less than 24 hours beating the Devils 4-1 in Lowell on Saturday followed by a 3-2 win in Springfield on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates will play four games in five days this week. The stretch begins Wednesday when they travel to Manchester to face the Monarchs. Friday, Portland travels to Lewiston and the Androscoggin Bank Colisee for a game against the Providence Bruins. Saturday the same two teams meet at the Civic Center before the Pirates wrap up action with an afternoon game in Worcester on Sunday.
Last week's play began Friday in Hartford where Felix Schutz (with his second in as many games), Tyler Ennis and Nathan Gerbe scored in a 6:45 span early in the third period to reverse a 2-0 disadvantage into a 3-2 lead. However, the Wolf Pack, who led 2-0 after the first and second periods, scored with 12.5 seconds remaining in regulation and 1:12 into overtime to escape with a 4-3 victory.
Saturday the Pirates rebounded as Jeff Cowan, Matt Caruana, Brad Larsen and Cody McCormick all scored on the way to 4-1 win over the Lowell Devils. Ennis added a pair of assists in the game. Caruana and Larsen both scored their first goals as a member of the Pirates.
The Pirates completed the weekend in Springfield Sunday afternoon as Schutz enjoyed his first career two-goal game in leading Portland to a 3-2 win. Paul Byron also scored in the game and Jhonas Enroth, in his second consecutive start after serving as the back-up for the previous five games, made 17 third- period saves to preserve the victory and help the Pirates extend their current streak of success.
